Hi, I can only speak from experience the official advice is to backup all data just in case. If you boot from the CD and do a repair installation all your programs and data will be intact but you will need to carry out critical updates again from MS and re-install SP1 if it is not part of the XP CD.

When I complete that and I expect to see the login screen, the virtual machine just reboots. Than, it keeps rebooting just before xwindows should startup, constantly. It doesn't even recognize an operating system so I can't boot into safe mode at all. BIOS isn't even able to run a hard drive test.. The hard drive is making wierd noises in the laptop..it sounds like it's clicking..or not reading anything. Is it possible for the hard drive to just go kaput like this?
